Basics
The "Royal Herb" or the "Good Herb" Basil is related to Mint.
Producers
Basil grows wild all over the world in the summer months, in green houses in winter months. Basil is produced heavily in the Mediterranean and the United States and has found its way into nearly every cuisine in the world. Some other forms of basil are Lemon Basil, Opal or Purple Basil, and Cinnamon Basil.
Aromatics and Flavors
Basil has the same aroma as combined cloves and anise and can be quite pungent.
Culinary Uses
Basil can be used fresh or dried, although the flavor and aroma of dried basil is no where near that of fresh. Pesto is the most common use today. Use fresh basil to flavor soups, sauces, salads, dressings, meats and seafood.
