Coriander

Basics

Coriander is perhaps my favorite spice. Both the fruit (seed) and leaf of the plant can add tremendous flavor to any dish. The leaf, commonly known as Cilantro is used in several cultural dishes. The Seed has been used for centuries as medicine and as a seasoning. 3500 years ago it was documented as being used for indigestion and head aches.

Producers

This herb and spice is grown world wide from the USSR to the USA. Coriander is available Ground or whole.

Aromatics and Flavors

Pepper and vinegar are the primary aromas from the herb. The Spice is much different, with a bit of citrus and peppercorn.

Culinary Uses

Coriander is one spice that can be used in both savory and sweet applications. Coriander is a primary component of Curry Powder and Pickling Spice. It can also be used with Cinnamon for a sweet dish such as stewed apples. I love this spice, if there is any one spice and herb that you may want to use or play with, try this one.
