Oregano

Basics

Oregano is a highly pungent herb from the mint family. Also related to Marjoram and Thyme, it is sometimes referred to as Savory Marjoram. There are two varieties I can think of, Mexican and Mediterranean. Mexican is the more pungent and spicy of the two.

Producers

Oregano will grow in almost any warm climate and is cultivated heavily in the Mediterranean, Mexico, and the USA. Keep an eye out for fresh Oregano of either variety in the upscale markets.

Aromatics and Flavors

The aroma and flavor of Oregano is very similar to Marjoram. Quite a pungent punch with fresh Oregano, and the flavor can range from slightly sweet to savory.

Culinary Uses

Any thing with tomatoes. I love Oregano for what it does to tomato dishes. I like either cooked tomatoes or just sliced with chopped Oregano. For seasoning Mexican food, add some fresh oregano to a chile and garlic based dish. Season fresh avocado salads, roast meats, sauteed mushrooms, and don't forget your pizza or pasta sauces.
