Poppy Seeds

Basics

Although Poppy Seeds DO IN FACT come from the Opium Poppy, they have no narcotic value once they are dried. The Poppy has been cultivated both for the seed and the other use for centuries. The three seed varieties available for culinary use are Yellow, Brown, and Blue.

Producers

Poppy Seeds are harvested in temperate climates from the far east to Europe. France, Holland, and India are the primary distributors.

Aromatics and Flavors

A bit hard to detect aroma but a nice sweet flavor.

Culinary Uses

Poppy Seeds are good for use in Sweet applications but can be used in Savory foods as well. My personal favorite is a sweet citrus short bread seasoned with blue poppy seeds. The two other seeds can make nice finishing touches to vegetables sauteed in butter.
